Typography

Web site and graphic designers are well aware of the importance of the correct use of images and color in their designs. The proper combinations are an integral part of any design, but most people outside of the design industry don’t know about the weight that typography lends to the finished product.

Websites in particular can suffer greatly from the use of bad fonts, some of which become unreadable when viewed online. Professional designers understand the part that typography plays in their work, but for the amateur designer, or those just interested in the subject, there are a number of great websites will guide you through the history and modern usage of fonts.

1. I Love Typography - A fantastic site for lovers of typography, and also the place to go to pick up the new quarterly magazine “Codex”, a publication devoted to all things typography related. 2. Ministry Of Type - A UK based site that focuses on the use of fonts in modern media, as well as having a section called, “pictures found online” that takes a look at fonts used in a non-digital format, but rather in such ordinary places as store windows and obscure printed media. 3. Typography Daily - A daily dose of typography articles that take a closer look at new fonts, typography related news and detailed looks at what inspires great designers. 4. Type Theory - The About Us section of the website describes them as “a journal of contemporary typography featuring news, views, reviews and interviews.” 5. Word It - A very cool site that runs a monthly contest for illustrators and designers; one word is chosen, and the artists interpret that word in their own unique way. 6. Friday Fonts - A collection of fonts developed by students in seminars and workshops offered by Pascal Glissmann. 7. The Font Feed - A collection of tips techniques, as well as examples of fonts in everyday use. 8. Aisle One - A site that focuses on graphic design and typography both modern and classic. 9. Typographica - News and reviews of new fonts and typefaces used in both print and digital media, plus great articles on the subject. 10. Type Director’s Club - An international organization that celebrates the best of print and digital design. They pay special attention to industry events, awards and contests.

These 10 represent a mere drop in the ocean when it comes to websites devoted to typography. A simple Google search will reveal thousands more, broken down into whatever type medium suits your interests.

Finding one or more that is of interest to you should be as easy as ABC.
